Cork East Fine Gael TD and Minister of State for Justice, David Stanton is urging people to attend a public meeting on Brexit at 7pm, Monday, 13th February, in the Clayton Silver Springs Hotel, Tivoli Cork.  An Taoiseach, Enda Kenny TD, will attend on the night.

“I would ask anyone with concerns as to our country’s response to Brexit to come along as they will have a chance to hear the work that the Government has done to date and the future strategy in place to minimise the effects of the United Kingdom’s decision to leave the European Union on Ireland.   I, and my Fine Gael colleagues, will all be there on the night and I look forward to engaging with everyone.

“Brexit has many implications for Ireland both north and south of the border.  It presents the most significant economic and social challenge in the past 50 years. From an economic perspective alone, €1.2 billion per week is traded between Ireland and the UK.  The possible removal of the Common Travel area which allows people to move freely between Ireland and UK is also of grave concern to business and tourism.  We are also concerned about the impact of Brexit on the Northern Ireland peace process and continued North-South cooperation”, noted Minister Stanton.

“Although Britain will not formally begin its withdrawal from the European Union until Article 50 is triggered, Fine Gael believes that we need to be proactive in dealing with issues and for this reason we have adopted a contingency framework to map out the key issues.  Details of this framework and other common questions regarding Brexit can be found on dedicated Brexit website: www.brexitresponse.ie

“One of the key measures of the framework is to conduct an all-island civic dialogue on Brexit through a series of meetings and the meeting next Monday evening in Cork is one of this series.   I would urge anyone who is concerned about the impact of Brexit and the Government’s response to it to come along”, concluded Minister Stanton.
