The volume of traffic passing through Lakeview Roundabout just south of Midleton on the N25 has increased dramatically over the last decade. Cork East Fine Gael TD and Minister of State at the Department of Justice, David Stanton believes that measures need to be taken to reduce congestion and improve traffic flow, in particular at peak times.
“The Lakeview Roundabout provides the only means of accessing the N25 for heavy vehicles from the oil refinery in Whitegate, which is our country’s only refinery. Congestion seems particularly pronounced on the southern side of the Lakeview roundabout caused by vehicles approaching from Whitegate, Ballycotton, Cloyne and Ballinacurra on the R630/R629. In addition to traffic from the refinery, a large number of my constituents living in this area would commute to Carrigtwohill, Little Island, Cork city and beyond for work. The tailbacks add considerable time to their journeys to work and so also have an impact on the local economy”, said Minister Stanton.
“The congestion and subsequent road safety issues at Lakeview Roundabout are frequently and consistently raised with me by constituents who are anxious that some action be taken. One of the simplest measures which could be introduced would be the construction of a slip road which would allow traffic on the R630/629 from Whitegate, Ballycotton, Cloyne and Ballinacurra travelling west to Cork city to access the N25 without passing through the roundabout. I understand that his proposal is being examined. I would hope that this could be progressed as soon as possible
