The Committee on Justice, Defence and Equality will start hearings on submissions received on the effectiveness of the Garda Síochána Act 2005 in relation to oversight of An Garda Síochána when it hears from a wide selection of interested groups and individuals at its meeting tomorrow, Wednesday, 14th May 2014.

The schedule for tomorrow’s meeting is:

Session A: 10am

Irish Human Rights Commission; Irish Council for Civil Liberties; Transparency International Ireland; Irish Traveller Movement; Amnesty International Ireland; and Garda Síochána Ombudsman Commission.

Session B: 2pm

Association of Garda Sergeants and Inspectors; the Bar Council of Ireland; Garda Inspectorate; Association for Criminal Justice Research and Development; and Dr Richard O Flaherty.

Committee Chairman David Stanton, TD, said: “Dáil Éireann requested that the Joint Committee on Justice, Defence and Equality to review the effectiveness of the legislation related to oversight of An Garda Síochána. We sought submissions from interested groups or individuals on the effectiveness of the Garda Síochána Act 2005 where it relates to the oversight of An Garda Síochána, including, in particular, the powers and remit of the Garda Síochána Ombudsman Commission.

“Tomorrow, we will get the perspectives of the Irish Human Rights Commission; the Irish Council for Civil Liberties; Transparency International Ireland; the Irish Traveller Movement; Amnesty International Ireland; the Garda Síochána Ombudsman Commission; the Association of Garda Sergeants and Inspectors; the Bar Council of Ireland; the Garda Inspectorate; the Association for Criminal Justice Research and Development; and Dr Richard O Flaherty on the effectiveness of the Garda Síochána Act 2005 in relation to oversight of An Garda Síochána.

“The submissions we received and the hearings tomorrow may help inform any report we will bring forward.”
