Cork East Fine Gael TD, David Stanton recently questioned the Minister for Enterprise on the recent closure of the Tytex factory in Youghal, Co. Cork.

“Tytex was the last large factory in operation in Youghal and its closure resulted in the loss of 75 jobs. This was another big blow to Youghal which has suffered significant job losses in recent years with many large manufacturing plants being forced to shut down.

“I am concerned that the Government are not doing enough to support and promote enterprise in Youghal. I would like to see better supports for indigenous local business. I would also like to see state agencies doing more to promote Youghal as a location for foreign investors and multi-nationals.

“The Minister for Enterprise told me in response to a Dail question that IDA Ireland is actively promoting the greater East Cork region to prospective investors via its network of overseas offices. He stated that in recent years employment in overseas companies in East Cork has grown significantly. The Minister also advised that Enterprise Ireland has approved €50 million in funding for client companies in the Cork area. While these are all welcome developments, my concern, is that Youghal is not benefitting from this growth and investment.

“In addition to enterprise, I also believe that Youghal has great tourism potential. It is a town steeped in history and occupies a very scenic location on the south coast. I have been working very closely with my colleague, John Deasy TD, in Waterford to promote tourism in the entire Blackwater Area in East Cork and West Waterford.

“More needs toed to shut down.
