Cork East Fine Gael TD, David Stanton has written to the Joint Oireachtas Committee on Justice, Defence and Women’s Rights asking that the committee invite the Court Service to explain its reasons for closing courthouses in Cobh and Mitchelstown.

“I am concerned that the decision to close courthouses in Cobh and Mitchelstown were taken, apparently, without any consultation with local interests. Removing such services from towns is a very serious matter. I have asked the Joint Oireachtas Committee to request that the Courts Service come before the Committee to explain the situation. I have also asked that a cost benefit analysis be provided to the Oireachtas Committee. I would expect that the Courts Service would also provide the Committee with an impact assessment on any clients of the Courts Service especially witnesses who may be called to give evidence. Extra demands placed on An Garda Siochana should also be taken into account.”
