Fine Gael TD for Cork East Constituency, David Stanton, is encouraging submissions to Iarnród Éireann’s public consultation on the proposed twin tracking of the rail line between Glounthaune and Midleton which opens today.
Speaking after the launch of the public consultation at Midleton Railway Station on Tuesday, Deputy Stanton said: “Iarnród Éireann are seeking submissions on its proposals to lay a twin track on the 10-kilometre section of the rail line between Glounthaune and Midleton which would see capacity and frequency of service greatly increased on the route.
“As part of a greater improvement package being delivered by the Cork Area Commuter Rail Programme under the Cork Metropolitan Area Transport Strategy (CMATS) 2040, these proposals would eventually enable train services to operate at 10 minute intervals compared to the recently reduced wait period of 30 minutes.
“The frequency of the Midleton to Cork commuter rail service was recently reduced to half hour intervals at off-peak times which has proved an enormously popular decision amongst commuters and visitors alike. I commend Iarnród Éireann, the National Transport Authority and Cork County Council on the work they have done to date in improving the reliability of the service along the route and the latest proposals to further increase frequency and capacity by twin tracking the line are very welcome. I would strongly encourage those living locally to view the proposals and consider a submission to the consultation”, concluded David Stanton.
Iarnród Éireann’s public consultation on the Glounthaune to Midleton Twin Tracking Project is open from Tuesday, 26 July to Tuesday, 16 August 2022. Further information on the proposals are available on the Iarnród Éireann website here:
In addition, two public information days will be held at My Place Community Centre, Midleton on Wednesday, 3 August from 1-8pm and at Glounthaune Community Centre on Thursday, 4 August from 1-8pm.
