Last week in Dail Eireann, Cork East Fine Gael TD, David Stanton received confirmation that lands for the two new Carrigtwohill schools have been identified. Deputy Stanton sought an update from the Minister for Education and Skills as to progress on the two new school projects – one for the amalgamation of the two primary schools and the other for a new second level school.
“Both these school building projects are on the Department of Education and Skills five year school building plan and are due to go to construction in 2014/2015. Given the large increase in population in Carrigtwohill in recent years, a new primary school, which will amalgamate the existing two schools, and a new post-primary school, are urgently needed to accommodate school children in the Carrigtwohill area.
“Further to ongoing concern from my constituents I raised this matter in Dail Eireann in July and again last week. I understand that there are now almost 900 children attending the two primary schools, Scoil Chlochair Mhuire and Scoil Mhuire Naofa, with the majority of these being accommodated in prefabs. These schools are due to be amalgamated in a new 32 classroom school in Carrigtwohill.
“In addition to the new primary, a new 1000 pupil mixed school under the patronage of the Education and Training Board in conjunction with the Bishop of Cloyne and will also be built.
“I am pleased that suitable lands have been identified for the schools and that the Minister has confirmed that acquisition of the site is now being progressed. I understand that once this is finalised the planning and tendering will be progressed.
