Fine Gael TD for Cork East and Minister of State at the Department of Justice, David Stanton, is encouraging older people and people living with disabilities in Cork East to apply for housing adaptation grants. This follows confirmation that a total of €5,617,405 in funding has been allocated to County Cork this year to enable those eligible to adapt their homes to improve their mobility and access.
Grants of up to €30,000 are available to assist people with a disability in carrying out necessary works. Older people living in poor housing conditions can avail of grants of up to €8,000 to have necessary repairs or improvements carried out while up to €6,000 is available in mobility aid grants.
“The Housing Adaptation Grant helps people to make changes and adaptations to their home to better cater for their needs, providing further support to older people and people with disabilities to remain living independently in their own homes. The grant could be used for a variety of improvements to the home including making properties wheelchair-accessible, providing an extension, adding ground-floor facilities or installing a stair-lift” said Minister Stanton.
“The grants are 80% funded from the exchequer by the Department of Housing, Planning and Local Government, with 20% funding from the relevant local authority. This year’s programme sees an 11% increase in allocated funding from the previous year, with all local authorities set to benefit” confirmed Minister Stanton.
“The scheme is all about improving quality of life for older people and people with disabilities and helping them to stay in their own homes for as long as they wish. I hope to see strong interest in the scheme by those who need it and I will be encouraging eligible constituents to apply for these grants through the local authority.”
