An additional allocation of €11 million from the Government to Cork County Council for road works has been welcomed by David Stanton, Fine Gael general election candidate in Cork East. The monies are being awarded under the severe weather allocation fund to allow Cork County Council to repair the unprecedented damage to local roads over the Christmas and New Year period.
“This winter’s storms have resulted in massive damage to local and secondary roads in the East Cork area. This allocation from the Department of Transport will assist Cork County Council in their efforts to carry out remedial works to the more than 60 road collapses and/or severe flooding problems in the East Cork area.
“I know that access and vehicle damage has been a big concern for local people on affected routes and that while much of the flooding has now receded, many road surfaces remain seriously damaged. In addition to the critical works that have been necessary there are extensive ongoing costs associated with potholes repairs, clearing of culverts and regular maintenance.
“The total fund available nationally is €106 million with €85 million of this being made available immediately to Local Authorities. Cork County Council will receive €11 million of the €85 million awarded. A further €8 million is being allocated to national roads and another €8 million for damaged rail infrastructure. The remaining funding will be allocated over the summer period where the need arises.
“I hope that this funding will allow for all the necessary works to be carried out on East Cork roads, our local road network is vital for people living here, businesses and tourism”, concluded David Stanton.
