Cork East Fine Gael TD, David Stanton has welcomed the commencement of construction on a new building for Gaelscoil Mhainistir na Corann. The new 24 classroom school will be located just outside Midleton, at Baneshane.

“Ground was broken this week for the new Gaelscoil. I believe that all is progressing well and that it is hoped that construction will be completed in April 2016”, said Deputy Stanton.

“Having been located in what was originally temporary accommodation in Midleton Community Centre, and facilitated greatly by the work of Midleton Community Centre Ltd Board members over the last 16 years, the Community Centre could no longer cater for the huge demand for places. The new building, a testament to the hard work of the Board of Management, Principal, Staff and parents, will mean that Gaelscoil Mhainistir na Corann will finally have a modern purpose built school premises which will further enhance the excellent education its pupils receive.

“The new Gaelscoil is the latest in what has been a very significant investment by the current Government in primary and secondary education in the East Cork area. At primary level, large extensions have been added to Kilcredan NS, Scartleigh NS in Saleen, Whitegate Mixed NS, Scoil Iosagain in Aghada, St John the Baptist NS and Rushbrooke NS. Planning has also been lodged for a new school for Midleton Educate Together at a site on the Mill Road and for another primary school on the grounds of Carrigtwohill GAA Club on a temporary basis.

“Secondary Schools have also benefitted with an extension at St Mary’s High School, and a practically new school for Midleton CBS Secondary School. A major extension will also begin shortly at St Colman’s Community College and a large new second level school is also on the way for Carrigtwohill.

“I am very pleased that excellent, state of the art educational facilities are being provided for our young people in East Cork. Such facilities further enhance the area as one of the best pleased in the country to live, work and raise a family.
