The beginning of construction on a new wastewater treatment plant at Shanbally has been welcomed by Cork East Fine Gael TD, David Stanton. The new plant forms part of the Cork Lower Harbour Main Drainage Project and will end the practice of untreated sewage being discharged directly into the harbour from Cobh, Carrigaline, Passage West/Monkstown and Ringaskiddy.
“The new treatment plan forms part of an overall investment of €91 million in the Cork Lower Harbour Main Drainage Project. It will benefit all communities in the Lower Harbour area by greatly improving water infrastructure. It will also benefit people’s health, local wildlife and the environment by improving water quality as untreated sewage will no longer be discharged into the harbour.
“The Cork Lower Harbour Main Drainage Project will also facilitate economic development in the East Cork area. This initial construction phase of the Shanbally plant will create 50 jobs. The overall project which includes a new treatment plant, pumping stations and new pipes has been designed to accommodate an increase in the local population and new industry to the area.
“Progress on this project, and the recent signing of contracts for the Youghal Main Drainage Wastewater Treatment Plant, are both great news for the East Cork area. The Youghal Wastewater Treatment Plant project will deliver upgraded wastewater infrastructure to Youghal and remove the current discharge of raw sewage into the Blackwater estuary and sea. This forms part of the €22.9 million scheme which includes the new treatment plant and upgrading of the sewer network.
