Cork East Fine Gael TD, David Stanton, has reiterated calls for the development of a state-of-the-art community centre for Castlemartyr.
David Stanton said: “Castlemartyr has seen a significant level of growth in recent years with new estates being built, more being planned and many new families moving into the area. A community such as this needs a focal point, a centre, where people of all ages can meet to undertake a variety of activities, which in turn would benefit the community as a whole”.
“I am involved in the development and operation of the ‘My Place’ centre in Midleton and over the last number of years the benefits of having such an amenity in the town have become clear with over 1000 people using the centre per week prior to the outbreak of the pandemic.
“With the County Development Plan now being devised there is an opportunity for Cork County Council to zone land in the vicinity of Castlemartyr to provide for a much-needed community centre. I have written to the Chief Executive of Cork County Council to highlight the potential for this development and I am also calling on County Councillors to take this need into account when finalising the upcoming County Development Plan.
“Castlemartyr is a growing, vibrant community and while a relief road has been proposed to alleviate traffic congestion in the town, modern community facilities are badly needed to further increase the quality of life of local residents. Almost all other towns and villages in East Cork have such centres and it is not before time that Castlemartyr is supported in the provision of a state-of-the-art community facility”, concluded Deputy Stanton.
