2021 funding represents a 15% increase on 2020 allocation
Cork East Fine Gael TD, David Stanton, has welcomed confirmation that Cork County Council will receive a 15% increase in its roads budget for 2021. The Department of Transport will allocate almost €66.6 million to Cork County Council for local and regional road works this year compared to €57.9 million in 2020.
Speaking after confirmation of the 2021 roads budget, Deputy Stanton said: “I am very happy to learn that Cork County Council’s roads budget will see a 15% year on year increase in 2021 to roughly €66.6 million. Such an allocation will enable increased expenditure on the maintenance and upgrade of regional and local road infrastructure throughout Cork County while Cork County Council’s funding allocations for Bridge Rehabilitation Works and Safety Improvement Works have risen to €1.875 million and €907,000 respectively.
“Eleven bridges will benefit from total funding of over €766,000 under the Bridge Rehabilitation Works allocation. In addition to these rehabilitation works funding of €210,000 will be split between six local roads for Safety Improvement Works and traffic calming measures in 2021 while over €302,000 has been designated to the Rathcormac South Resurfacing project”.
“This funding is paramount in ensuring the safeguarding of local and regional road infrastructure and protecting against deteriorating effects caused by extreme weather and climate change. The proposed works are crucial in improving the safety of local road users and increasing connectivity between rural communities in Cork East. As part of the Council’s allocation the funding package also includes provisions for the rollout of a signage programme relating to lower speed limits in housing estates and safe passing signs for cyclists”, concluded David Stanton.
