Cork East Fine Gael TD, David Stanton has said that Fine Gael will establish a feasibility study into the possibility of re-establishing the sugar beet industry if in Government.
Following the European Court of Auditors criticims of the EU restructuring plan which resulted in the shutdown of the Irish sugar industry, David Stanton TD requested and was granted a Dail adjournment debate on the matter
Cork East Fine Gael TD has called on the Goverment to immediately initiate a feasibility study on the re-opening of the Irish sugar industry aligned with ethanol production. The European Court of Auditors has said that the decision in 2005 to close our sugar industry was based on inaccurate information. As a result we are now totally dependent on sugar imports which were valued at €99 million in 2009 alone
