Following requests from members of the public, David Stanton TD has received confirmation from Cork County Council engineering staff that the lights at the crossing at St Mary’s Road are to be repaired.

“These lights have been vandalised on a number of occasions. This is very disturbing as they are an essential road safety measure at this very busy crossing”, said Deputy Stanton.

“I am pleased that Cork County Council is prepared to repair the crossing lights again. I have also requested that the existing road markings in the area be repainted and that additional road markings be put in place to warn motorists of the existence of the zebra crossing”.

“Very small children use this crossing and are under the impression that they are safe when on the crossing. However, traffic approaches this crossing at speed and I have, myself, witnessed many close calls. I am fearful that somebody may be injured or worse and I am calling on motorists to approach this crossing with great care”.

Deputy Stanton understands that there is a proposal to have this junction completely rebuilt as part of the Midleton/ Carrigtwohill traffic management but has been informed by Cork County Council that this is totally dependant on funding being available.
