The Chair of the Oireachtas Justice Committee has said that a Register of Domestic Violence should be introduced in Ireland. This folllows the roll out of such a scheme, known as “Clare’s Law” in the UK yesterday – which was international Women’s Day. Under this scheme, women can find out if their partner has a history of domestic violence.

Deputy Stanton said: “We need to do much more to protect victims of domestic violence, and the introduction of such a scheme would be an important step. We heard from over 20 groups and individuals who addressed the Oireachtas Justice and Equality Committee over the past two weeks. ‘

“I look forward to the proiduction of the Committee report, which I hope will be acted upon withpout delay by the Government. “
