Cork East Fine Gael TD, David Stanton, has confirmed that the Department for Rural and Community Development will grant funding of €220,000 between two constituency projects under its Town and Village Renewal Scheme to aid towns and villages in progressing local community projects or enhancing existing attractions and amenities.
Under the scheme’s latest tranche of funding, €54,000 will be awarded to the Glenbower Wood Trail in Killeagh for the replacement of three of the wood’s existing wooden bridges in addition to the development of several wood trail maps throughout the various tracks. Separately, €165,000 has been earmarked for the development of car parking, pedestrian access and associated signage and information boards at Coolagown, Fermoy.
Speaking after receiving confirmation of the funding from the Minister for Rural and Community Development, Heather Humphreys TD, Deputy Stanton said: “I am certain that this announcement is very welcome news for both local communities in Killeagh and Coolagown. The funding for Glenbower Wood is pivotal in ensuring the continued maintenance and development of an amenity that has proved enormously popular amongst locals and visitors alike. With a range of different trails, Glenbower Wood can cater for a variety of outdoor activities including walking, running, mountain biking and hiking while the tranquil settings are perfect for nature trips.
“Outdoor activities are very important in contributing to the better health and wellbeing of the community, and these proposed works will greatly improve local amenities at a time when it is needed most. The availability of options for undertaking local outdoor activities and excursions are constantly increasing while larger recreational infrastructure projects such as the MY Greenway from Midleton to Youghal continue apace”, concluded David Stanton.
