The need to progress the new second level school and primary school amalgamation in Carrigtwohill has been raised, again, in Dail Eireann by David Stanton TD, Fine Gael TD for Cork East
“The amalgamation of the two primary schools in Carrigtwohill. Scoil Mhuire Naofa and Scoil Chlochair Mhuire, has been planned for some time and I am anxious that a site be secured as soon as possible. I am aware that both schools are operating at full capacity, and have been for some time, and that they are concerned about their ongoing ability to meet demand for places through temporary accommodation. These are the only two primary schools in Carrigtwohill which has had a large influx of people in recent years.
“A brand new second level school is also planned for Carrigtwohill which will operate in addition to the girls’ second level school, St Aloysius. Currently boys from Carrigtwohill have to travel to Midleton, Cobh or Glanmire once they complete their primary education”, said Deputy Stanton.
“The Minister for Education and Skills, Jan O’Sullivan TD confirmed in December 2014 that both the amalgamated primary school and the new second level school projects are due to go to construction in 2015 and I would like to see progress with site acquisitions soon. When I questioned the Minister on the progress with the new Carrigtwohill schools she advised the following:
I can confirm to the Deputy that my Department has been working very closely with officials from Cork County Council to secure suitable lands for the schools referred to by the Deputy. I can confirm that suitable lands have been identified and the conveyancing process in relation to their acquisition is underway.
In tandem with the completion of the conveyancing process, the project for the schools concerned is being progressed under my Department’s Design and Build programme. A project manager has been appointed and a meeting will shortly be arranged with the school’s patron to explain the Design & Build process and to outline next steps.
