Cork East Fine Gael TD, David Stanton is continuing to lobby An Post to retain a post office in Ballinacurra.
“I have asked An Post to discuss options for the retention of a post office in Ballinacurra. I believe that a local post office is a vital community service, particularly in a growing area like Ballinacurra where many new large housing estates have been built. Every effort should be made by An Post to facilitate the retention of full post office services in Ballinacurra.
“Over the last month I have spoken to a number of individuals who are eager to take over the running of a post office in Ballinacurra. I have been doing all I can to facilitate a meeting with An Post officials to explore possible options. As it stands, while some postal services will still be available in Ballinacurra village, the full range of normal post office services will be lost.
“I am extremely disappointed at the decision by An Post not to look for other expressions of interest for the contract of Ballinacurra post office. Clearly there are local people interested in taking over the contract. The post office in Ballinacurra has been in operation for over 150 years and I understand is one of the busiest sub post offices in the country. It will be a great loss to the people in Ballinacurra to lose their local post office.
“In addition to writing to the CEO and contacting other An Post officials, I have also been lobbying the Minister seeking his support for the retention of An Post services in Ballinacurra. I shall also be raising the matter in Dail Eireann. Ballinacurra is a growing area with many new housing estates. I feel that it is important for people that their local post office continues to operate.
