The new pontoon in Youghal will greatly enhance marine tourism facilities of the town according to Cork East Fine Gael TD and Minister of State at the Department of Justice, David Stanton. The pontoon and gangway at Nealon’s Quay will complement the eight visitor moorings which were put in place in the harbour last summer.
“It is wonderful to his new facility installed in Youghal harbour. Funding of €112,500 was also made available by my colleague, Minister for Agriculture, Food and the Marine, Michael Creed TD under his Department’s Local Authority Harbour programme and the balance supplied by Cork County Council”, said Minister Stanton.
“I would like to congratulate Cork County Council on all their work to bring this project to fruition including substantial preliminary work on planning permission and securing a foreshore licence. The dedication and support of local people, in particular, Youghal Maritime Development Group is also to be commended.
“Youghal’s marine tourism product will greatly benefit from the new pontoon and gangway which will be open over the summer months from May to October each year. The pontoon will provide locals and visitors with improved access to the harbour, Blackwater estuary and river with superb scenic beauty. Given the success of the visitor buoys to date I am confident that this new asset will further increase tourism in the town and surrounding area.
“This project comes in addition to substantial investment in other areas of Youghal town such as the refurbished eco-boardwalk, the Clock Gate tower, St Mary’s Collegiate Church and gardens and the medieval town walls. The completion of works on Youghal Waste Water Treatment plant and other wastewater infrastructure will also ensure clean beaches and harbour and will allow for expansion of the town into the future.
