The decision by Cork County Council to proceed with public realm works in Cobh in conjunction with works for the Lower Harbour Drainage Scheme has been welcomed by Cork East Fine Gael TD and Minister of State at the Department of Justice, David Stanton TD.
“I was very pleased that Cork County Council has decided to carry out improvements to the public space in Cobh when Irish Water is conducting the main drainage project works. The Cork Lower Harbour Drainage Scheme will entail major construction works and present a great opportunity to upgrade streetscapes, footpaths and lighting in the town centre.
“I know that many local groups had been liaising with Irish Water and Cork County Council and were very anxious that upgrading works such as paving, footpaths, ornamental light stands and public seating be carried out when roads and footpaths are being reinstated. I understand that Cork County Council are currently working on a scheme for the works but that these works will include the provision of ducting so that unsightly overhead cables can be moved underground.
“All public realm improvement works are to be included in the Irish Water contract. This is a great opportunity to redesign the town centre and enhance the historic aspect of Cobh town and its tourism product”, noted Minister Stanton
