Cork East Fine Gael David Stanton has welcomed the Government announcement that three local schools will receive extensions in 2014. These extensions form part of the Department of Education’s 5 year programme and all projects will go to construction next year
“I was very pleased to get confirmation today that extensions have been approved for two second level schools and one primary school in East Cork. In Midleton, the CBS Secondary School and St Colman’s Community College will both receive extensions. Watergrasshill NS will also be extended.
“This is great news for East Cork. Students will benefit from improved facilities and teachers will benefit from an improved work environment. On top of the educational benefits, these extensions will also provide a welcome boost to the local economy in East Cork in particular the construction industry
“These three extensions form part of the €2 billion five year plan which will see 275 new major school building projects implemented over the period 2012-2016 to provide more than 100,000 permanent school places over the course of the five year plan.
“In 2014, 70 major projects are scheduled to proceed to construction across the country which include 22 new primary schools; 12 primary school extensions; 12 new second-level schools; 20 second-level school extensions; 3 new special schools, and 1 major special school extension which in total will provide over provide over 27,500 permanent school places nationally and supporting 3,200 direct jobs in 2014.
“In addition to these three extensions, there are also other extensions and new builds planned for East Cork in the coming years and I expect further announcements in relation to these from the Department of Education.
