Confirmation of funding of over €1.8 million for marine infrastructure projects in Ballycotton and Youghal has been warmly welcomed by Cork East Fine Gael TD for Cork East Constituency, David Stanton.

Under the Brexit Adjustment Local Authority Marine Infrastructure Scheme 2022-2023 to provide funding to local authorities to rejuvenate Ireland’s public marine infrastructure post-Brexit, a total of €1,808,936 will be allocated to Cork County Council to progress projects at Ballycotton Harbour and at Green Quay in Youghal.

Project – Funding approved

  • Dredging works at Ballycotton Harbour – €1,415,260
  • Ballycotton sea wall repairs, installation of access gates and additional signage – €295,207
  • Green Quay Youghal safety improvement works – €98,469

Total – €1,808,936

Speaking after confirmation of the funding allocations, Deputy Stanton said: “This funding will be very welcome news for those in Ballycotton and Youghal, with the dredging works at Ballycotton Harbour being particularly badly needed.

“It has been evident for many years that Ballycotton Harbour was silting up and this was causing great concern to local fishermen and other users of the harbour. The harbour is of course of particular importance as the base of the Ballycotton lifeboat and these dredging works should be of great benefit to both harbour users and the wider community. In addition, repairs to the sea wall and the installation of access gates and signage will see safety greatly increased on Ballycotoon Pier while similar safety improvement works will be conducted at Green Quay, Youghal.

“Ballycotton has become a very popular place with the extremely picturesque cliff walk, the high-grade restaurants and hotel as well as the traditional pubs in the village.  Ballycotton is a place of great potential and it is very welcome news that the Government has made this funding available from the Brexit Agreement Reserve at this time.  Recognition must also be given to Cork County Council for making the successful application and I am sure that the Council will waste no time in beginning to have the works carried out”, concluded Deputy Stanton.
