The award of €150,000 funding for heritage regeneration works in Youghal has been welcomed by Cork East Fine Gael TD and Minister of State at the Department of Justice, David Stanton. Funding is being made available to Cork County Council, under the Historic Towns Initiative 2018, financed by the Department of Culture, Heritage and the Gaeltacht and operated by the Heritage Council.
“I am very pleased that Cork County Council has received these monies for important public realm regeneration works in the medieval quarter of Youghal. I understand that funding will be used for pavement restoration at Barry’s Lane and also for works to the town walls which will extend the walk to North Main Street”, said Minister Stanton.
“Youghal is one of just seven towns to receive funding under this initiative and I would like to congratulate Cork County Council for their success in securing funding, in what I understand, was a very competitive process. I would also like to congratulate all of those who are engaged in enhancing Youghal’s heritage attractions. These have been substantially developed in recent years with improvements to the town walls and St Mary’s Collegiate Church in the Raleigh Quarter and the opening of the Clock Gate Tower in 2016.
Minister Stanton concluded by saying: “In addition, to the touristic appeal of Youghal’s heritage, many other leisure attractions have also been developed to draw visitors to the area. These include eight recently opened visitor moorings in Youghal Harbour, Youghal Eco Boardwalk from Claycastle to Front Strand, Youghal Greyhound Track and Aura Leisure Centre.
