Fine Gael TD for Cork East, David Stanton, has today (Tuesday), put forward an amendment to the Electoral Act 1997, to give people who are away on holidays the facility to vote by post in elections.

“The amendment I have presented today will allow people who are on holidays at the time of an election to make an application to have their names entered into the postal voters’ list.

“I regularly meet constituents in the run up to elections or referendums who will be on holidays on the date of the vote. These people are often extremely politically aware and are upset that they will not have the opportunity to exercise their right to vote.

“The people affected by this are people living and working in Ireland, people who are directly impacted by the outcome of an election or of a referendum.

“The amendment I am proposing will make a small but significant change to Electoral Act. Everybody eligible to vote should be afforded the opportunity to do so and this amendment would make this possible.”
