Fine Gael TD for Cork East and Chair of the Oireachtas Justice Committee, David Stanton has welcomed the seizure of a very significant quantity of cocaine by the Irish Navy off the south west coastline. The consignment of drugs and the people on board the vessel carrying the cocaine were taken to Cork Harbour under armed guard.

“Yesterday’s huge cocaine seizure underscores the importance of our naval service in deterring drug smugglers from our waters and shoreline for criminal purposes. This is an important reminder of the important of continued financial support for our navy.

“The crews of LÉs Niamh and Róisín deserve great praise for their role in this operation. They have put themselves in a dangerous situationin order to combat international drug trafficking in our waters.

“I also want to congratulate the An Garda Síochána and the Customs National Drugs Team for their role in the seizure. I understand that this seizure has come about as a result of close cooperation with our EU partners.
