Cork East Fine Gael TD, David Stanton has welcomed the commencement of construction on the My Place facility in Midleton. ‘My Place’, will be a youth and community facility located in the centre of the town in the old fire station premises.

“The progress on the My Place project has been substantial in recent months and with the signing of contracts last week, construction has now begun on the premises. The level of support from local people, community groups and businesses has been phenomenal and fundraising efforts have been extremely successful. Without this local support and the help of SECAD, Cork County Council and Clann Credo and the former Town Council, the project most certainly would not have got off the ground”, said Deputy Stanton.

“Despite a large growth in population in the last decade or so, Midleton has very few community spaces. Midleton also has four second level schools but remains one of the only large towns in the country to have no youth centre or youth café where young people can socialise in a safe environment. With the construction of this new centre, they will now have an indoor space to meet friends.

“In addition to the youth facility, it is planned that the building and rooms will also be available to the wider community and groups who need meeting space or rooms for activities.

“I understand that further funds are needed and that fundraising is continuing. It is expected that construction should be completed by the end of this year and that the premises will be open to the public shortly after this.
