The Joint Committee on Justice, Defence and Equality will start its hearings on the General Scheme of Gambling Control Bill tomorrow, Wednesday, 2nd October 2013 when it will hear from a number of groups who have made submissions.
Those attending tomorrow’s meeting include: representatives from the Gaming and Leisure Association of Ireland; Betfair; Remote Gambling Association; Association of Irish Showmen’s Guild Ltd; Paddy Power; and Irish Bookmakers Association.
Committee Chairman David Stanton TD said: “The General Scheme of the Bill contains proposals for the licensing and regulation of gambling in Ireland. It proposes a new and comprehensive framework for the regulation, including licensing, of gambling in Ireland. On enactment the Gambling Control Bill will replace present legislation, in particular the Betting Act 1931 and the Gaming and Lotteries Act 1956. As well as providing a unified legal basis and simplifying administrative procedures, it will be possible to adjust and respond more quickly to technological developments in the area of gambling control. Tomorrow a number of interested groups will have an opportunity to outline in detail their perspectives on the draft legislation.
