The latest Central Statistics Office (CSO) figures showing an 8% decrease in crime are a tribute to the hard work and professionalism of An Garda Siochána, according to Fine Gael Cork East Deputy and Chair of the Oireachtas Justice Committee, David Stanton TD.

“The figures released today by the CSO prove the success of An Garda Siochána in combatting crime in our country. In addition to the overall reduction in recorded crime of 8%, we have also seen a reduction in 13 out of the 14 crime categories.

“As a member of Joint Policing Committees in Cork, which have examined community policing initiatives, I am particularly encouraged to the see a marked decrease in crimes which have a big effect on communities. Residents in areas which are particularly prone to public order offences, assaults and burglaries suffer as a result of these crimes. The success of An Garda Siochána in reducing these offences makes a real difference to people’s lives.

“I would like to congratulate An Garda Siochána for the success of their work in keeping our citizens safe and in protecting communities.”
