Fine Gael TD for Cork East, David Stanton has welcomed the announcement by Minister for Agriculture, Simon Coveney, of €1 million for repairs and upgrades to piers, quays and harbours in coastal areas. This includes funding of €112,000 for work on Ballycotton Pier.

“This news will be welcomed by fishermen, sailors and other mariners in East Cork. I am glad that in these challenging economic times the Minister has recognised the importance of supporting the fishing industry which is a vital source of income and employment in marine communities.

“This work will also generate much needed employment in the local community. It is estimated that in excess of 700 man weeks of employment could be created from the approval of this programme nationally. Furthermore Cork County Council, who like all local authorities are currently very hard pressed for funding, will be grateful for the financial input.”
