Cork East Fine Gael TD, David Stanton has warmly welcomed the recent handover of Spike Island from the Department of Justice to Cork County Council.

“I was delighted to be present on Spike Island for the official handover at 5pm on Sunday, 11th July. For many years now I have been campaigning for the development of this island in a way that would benefit Cobh, East Cork and the entire harbour area.

“Spike island is steeped in history and occupies a very visible location in Cork harbour, and is easily accessible by ferry. I firmly believe in its potential as a tourist attraction and in its capacity to attract visitors to the Cork area for the benefit of local businesses and residents alike.

“I look forward to seeing the plans that Cork County Council have for the development of Spike Island. I would hope that, despite the poor state of public finances, work will soon begin on the island with a view to opening a visitor attraction there as soon as possible.
